Jazz in the Desert 2020!

Join us for Jazz in the Desert XI this Saturday, February 29th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Jazz bands from Nogales, Rio Rico, Walden Grove, Sahuarita, and Great Expectations Academy will be performing. Chicago Music Store will be there to supply the backline gear in addition to providing a display to let students audition intermediate and pro level instruments!

Free Mandolin Clinic

Saturday, February 29th, 2020 from 2:00-4:00pm 

Free 2-hour clinic focusing on Simplified Mandolin Chords, Double-Stops, and Basic Improvising. This clinic is hands on so bring your instrument. All levels and abilities are welcome.

This workshop will introduce beginners to a new way of making a full range of simplified chords and double-stops which will facilitate building basic solos. Intermediates will learn how to use these double-stops in several key licks (with corresponding scales and intros) that easily become the basis for constructing solos in the keys of D, A, G, and C.

Our instructor will be Andy McCune.
Andy plays and teaches banjo, guitar, mandolin, and dobro. He performs with local bands Rusty Chops and Titan Valley Warheads.

FIDDLE & Bowed Strings CLINIC

What: Free 2-hour clinic focusing on Bluegrass Fiddle Music on the Violin, Viola, or Cello. This clinic is hands on so bring your instrument. All ability levels from beginner to advanced players are welcome. Attendees should know how to create notes on their instruments and play in tune. No prior knowledge of Bluegrass is required.

When: Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Where: The Chicago Store Eastside, 5646 E. Speedway Blvd, Tucson AZ 85712, just east of Craycroft.

What: This clinic will address various levels of the Fiddle, starting with basic techniques and then progressing to songs, melodies, techniques for learning by ear, improvisation, and tips for playing in an ensemble. The depth of coverage for each topic will be determined by the ability levels of the participants. The clinic will be interactive…all questions are welcome!

Our instructor will be Eldridge Wisely. Ellie grew up in Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, surrounded by mountain music. She started playing classical music 27 years ago, and transitioned to traditional fiddle music genres 19 years ago. She is a PhD student at the Univ. of Arizona studying wildlife genetics, and performs locally with Therin, a Celtic Folk band, Twangster’s Paradise, a local bluegrass band, and with her all-female Celtic Rock band, The Eldritch Dragons. She teaches private lessons on Violin, Viola, Fiddle styles, and Clawhammer Banjo.

Free D’Addario Restring Event: Saturday April 20th

Your Chicago Music Store in conjunction with D’Addario and Co. is excited to announce our Playback Recycling and Restring event happening on Saturday April 20th at our Speedway location. April is Earth Month, and in to do our part we need to increase our recycling efforts.

D’Addario will provide every player who brings their instrument to one of these events 1 FREE set of NYXL or Nickel Bronze Strings of their choice and your Chicago Music Store will put them on your guitar for free and recycle your old strings.

Banjo Clinic!

What: Free 2-hour clinic focusing first on Don Reno banjo style and then transitioning into on-stage sound systems. This clinic is hands on so bring your instrument. All levels and abilties are welcome.

When: Saturday, February 9th, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Where: The Chicago Store Eastside, 5646 E. Speedway Blvd, Tucson AZ 85712, just east of Craycroft.

What: First hour to cover Don Reno banjo style including chord melody and single string technique, revealing opportunities to add variety to your banjo playing. Second hour will continue with Reno or other banjo styles, but then transition into discussion about on-stage sound production technique.

Our instructors will be Alvin Blaine and Andy McCune.

Alvin Blaine grew up in California and ended up in Las Vegas, playing with show bands for 25 years. He can play any kind of music, and almost any instrument, including banjo, pedal steel, slide, and dobro. He is a sound technician for Old Blue Sound, regarded as the best sound company in the Southwest. He provides sound systems for festivals and concerts in 10 states. Alvin also performs locally, recently with Nick McBlaine & Log Train, Tucsonics, and more.
Andy McCune plays various banjo styles and teaches banjo, and guitar, mandolin, and dobro. He performs with local bands Rusty Chops, Titan Valley Warheads.

Free Guitar Clinic with Greg Morton!

Saturday, January 19, 2019, 2-4 PM at Chicago Store Eastside, 5646 E. Speedway Blvd, Tucson! Our instructor is Greg Morton. There are not many folks alive who can say they’ve actually played with the great bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe, but Greg Morton is one of them. A flat picking guitarist who appears to make playing completely effortless, Morton has been gracing Tucson stages ever since he moved here almost 20 years ago. Since then, he has appeared at the Tucson Folk Festival many times. And, if you’ve frequented La Cocina on a Friday evening, you will already have experienced Greg’s unique style and sound.
